Description:

George III armorial silver tea urn, John Israel London, dated 1795, vasiform urn on pedestal flanked by bound-wheat form handles, decorated with acanthus, reeded and stippled designs in the Classical taste, center coat of arms Duppa with Baas; complete hallmarks.
H22 1/2" W13 1/2", and 150.0oz Troy

Provenance: Sylvania, Georgia private collection

Other Notes: This coat of arms was made especially for the wife of Reverend Richard Hancorn after her husband's death in 1790. Reverend Hancorn assumed the surname of Duppa and the accompanying coat of arms by an Act of Parliament in order to acquire the estates left by the Duppa family after his first cousin Baldwin Duppa died leaving no other heirs. Rev. Hancorn married a German heiress whose surname was Baas, which is why this coat of arms has the arms of the two families together. The presence of the arms within a diamond form signifies that Mrs. Baas-Duppa was a widow at the time of its creation.
