Other Notes: The 1798 Rebellion in Ireland was influenced by the revolutionary ideas of the 1789 French Revolution. Eleven counties of Ireland in Ulster, Leinster, and Connacht rose against English rule over a span of six months in the same year, demanding and fighting for their nation; their goals included Catholic emancipation and parliamentary reform. The rebellion was short-lived after the Irish didn't receive aid from the French as promised because the war between France and England was preventing any sort of French landing on Irish ground. After multiple battles, the rebels were defeated and the United Irishmen lost to Britain.
In January of 1801, Britain and Ireland signed the Act of Union thus combining the two nations and taking away Ireland's independence. Robert Emmett, a young and ambitious Irish patriot wanted to continue the fight that the Rebellion of 1798 started, known as Independence from England. On July 23 of 1803, a rebellion was led by Emmet in an attempt to overthrow the established government in Dublin. The battle became too much for the rebels and Emmet called off the attack, fled to the mountains in hiding, and was later arrested. He was executed in Thomas Street the day after he made his famous speech on the dock, -…Let no man write my epitaph…When my country takes her place among the nations of the Earth, then, and not till then, let my epitaph be written.-
The Irish Rebellion of 1803 was the beginning of Irish Republicanism, the first revolt in an attempt to overthrow the government, whereas previous revolts wanted to achieve political reform. Mark Bloxham commanded the Liberty Regiment that suppressed the Robert Emmet Rebellion. He was the recipient of a sword of honor from the City of Dublin, and was himself High Sheriff of Dublin in 1804-1805 and Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1816-1817.
