Upon his return from Egypt on board the Jumna with the Regiment on April 21, 1884, he was promoted to Captain, and presented by Colonel E.A. Wood to the Prince of Wales (his Colonel) at the Levee held on July 14, 1884 at St. James's Palace.

After being awarded a Brevet of Major on June 15, 1885, he was again presented at the Levee on July 13, 1885 by Major General Harman.

Wilson was appointed Deputy-Assistant Adjutant-General on August 27, 1895, and retired on pay on July 17, 1896. He was appointed from the Reserve of Officers to the Imperial Yeomanry at the outbreak of the Boer War, and would go to South-Africa in the spring of 1900. He returned a year later aboard the Mongolian, reaching Southampton on June 8.

Wilson was made Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel R.H.F.W. Wilson, Commandant of the 12th Battalion; upon his 1901 resignation he was appointment honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and permission to wear his Imperial Yeomanry uniform was granted on January 3, 1902. A few days later, on January 8, he was appointed Commandant of the 3rd Provisional Regiment of Hussars. He was awarded a D.S.O. a few months later.

This inscribed salver was to commemorate his marriage to Annabella Margaret Walker-Drummond in 1889.

They wanted to build a lavish home in Palm Beach for the season, which was to be designed by Marion Sims Wyeth. The oceanfront estate know today as Vita Serena on 105 Clarendon Avenue was completed after the death of Mr. Jones. Mrs. Jones later married Captain Robert Amcotts Wilson, and they considered the Palm Beach estate their second home. It was eventually sold to Jean Flagler Matthews, who rented the house to King Saud during the early 1960s. Today this magnificient property is for sale at the asking price of 27.9 million dollars.
