Other Notes: Barboursville Ruins was the mansion of James Barbour, a former U.S. Senator, U.S. Secretary of War, and Virginia Governor. The house was designed by Thomas Jefferson and was completed in 1822. On Christmas Day 1884 the mansion burned and was left as ruins. In 1969, the ruins were placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and efforts are being made to preserve the site.
