Grimm showed artistic talent at an early age while studying in Germany at 18 was awarded a scholarship for study in Dusseldorf's Royal Academy. When Grimm returned to the US, he moved to Hollywood and painted movie sets, before settling permanently in Palm Springs in 1932. Though he painted coastal and Sierra Mountain scenes, he is recognized as a painter of desert scenes, which he painted during his 42 years as a resident of Palm Springs.
