Other Notes: Harry Hall was a prominent 19th century painter most widely known for his depictions of racehorses and jockeys. The sport of coursing greyhounds in England was growing in popularity during this time and Hall received commissions from greyhound owners to paint their prize hounds. These Hall sporting dog pictures are rare and seldom come up for sale.
Foremost was born in 1841 and was bred by Mr. Fyson. He was by Mr. Fyson's Fantail ex Mr. Fyson's Frederica, by Mr. Dobede's Damon. Mr. Fyson was a member of the Newmarket Coursing Club. Foremost ran for Mr. Dobede who lived in Newmarket. His best performance was winning a stake at Cardington, Bedfordshire in January of 1844, and he stood at stud from 1845-1850. In 1849 his son, Forward, ran up to Magician in the Waterloo Cup, whilst another son, Czar, won the consolation event, the Altcar Stakes.
