Description:

Historic Mount Pleasant plat: survey of Snee Farm by Charleston architect Edward Brickell White (South Carolina, 1806-1882)
LANDS BELONGING TO WILLIAM MATHEWS IN CHRIST CHURCH PARISH, 1844
watercolor & ink, framed, signed & dated lower center
sight size: H9 1/2" W13 3/4"

Provenance: Charleston, South Carolina collection

Other Notes: William Mathews purchased Charles Pinckney's former plantation Snee Farm in 1828. He tore down the plantation house and constructed the dwelling that today is the center of the National Park Service's Charles Pinckney National Historic Site. That house can be seen on the left hand side of the plat surrounded by several outbuildings that no longer exist. The two roads roughly follow the same course as modern day US 17 and Long Point Road with historic Christ Church and its vestry house at their intersection. Surveyor Edward B. White was a prominent Charleston architect and gothic Revivalist with such buildings as the Huguenot Church, Grace Episcopal (both in Charleston), and Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbia to his credit.
