Provenance : Present owner contacted Stubblefield, and the artist told him that he painted this for his father.

Other Notes: Hord Stubblefield was born in Hartsville, SC and raised in Greenwood, SC. He obtained a degree in architecture from Clemson University in 1940 before joining the Navy during WWII. He then moved to New York and obtained a graduate degree in Illustration from Pratt Institute in 1951. While in New York, he worked as an artist for the ad agency, Ogilvy and Mather. He also freelanced for publications such as the SATURDAY EVENING POST, TIME, and BOYS' LIFE. After twenty-seven years he retired to Columbia, SC where he was a frequent illustrator for THE POINT and SANDLAPPER magazine.
