Hughes, Lester American, TX (20th century) COWBOYS AT SUNSET oil on canvas, framed signed: lower right H24" W30" *Note: El Paso artist, Lester Hughes is a self-taught artist who produces richly imaginative landscapes of the Southwest and horseback-riding cowboys intent on their duties. In 1976 the then President-elect Ronald Reagan was given one of Hughes' paintings. Reagan so liked the painting that it and several other Hughes paintings hung in the White House during Reagan's tenure. Reagan eventually amassed a collection of more than a dozen. Celebrities, congressmen, senators and ex-Presidents Bush and Ford all have Hughes in their art collections. Still a prolific artist, Hughes continues to enjoy creating art and encouraging other artist in their careers.
