Important pair George IV giltwood armchairs, stamped: Morant & Co circa 1850, arched upholstered back and scrolled arms above shaped seat, covered in brass-nailed damask fabric, on scrolled and foliate cabriole legs with scrolling dolphin feet; stamped: Morant & Co, 91 New Bond St., London, and also inscribed: R-3428 & R-3429, 20th C-Fox, 3-13-36; BH43 1/2" SH17 1/2" (2pcs)

Provenance: Bobby Dodd collection, Atlanta, Georgia

Exhibitions: These chairs were featured in the 20th Century Fox film Lloyd's of London starring Tyrone Power in 1936. One of these chairs can be seen in Lord Everett Stacy's foyer. They are early replicas of an 18th century gilt-walnut upholstered armchair in the Donaldson Collection; see reference under Literature.
During recent reupholstery the present owner inserted an additional piece onto the crestrail to modify the shape which can easily be removed.

Other Notes: The firm of Morant, Boyd & Morant was established in 1790 by George Morant located at 88 New Bond Street, London. By 1852 the firm had become known as Morant & Boyd and had premises at 91 New Bond Street and another move to 81 New Bond Street took place in 1858. The firm merged with Lenygon & Co
1912 and then became known as Lenygon & Morant.
