Impressive Southern slave-made stoneware jar, signed Dave Edgefield, South Carolina, dated May 29, 1857
rich alkaline glaze with rolled lip above large high lug handles centered by inscription: LM, MAY 29 1857, DAVE at opposing side eight punctuate centered by two slash marks, approximately eight gallons.

Provenance: From a South Carolina private collection.

  • Very tight, stable hairline at mid-body 5 3/8" long; otherwise very good condition with age consistent wear to base.
