James Monroe autographed letter, signed reading: I James Monroe minister plenipotentiary of the United States of American at court of Great Britain.

Desire all who it may concern to permit Thomas Pinckney a citizen of the United States of America to pafs [pass] without giving or suffering any molestation or hindrance to be given to him but, on the contrary, affording him all requisite assistance and protection, and wants do in similar circumstances to all those who might be recommended to me ---

The said Thomas Pinckney is twenty two years of age-five feet seven inches in height-grey eyes, dark hair-fair complexion---

In witness where of, I have delivered to him this Pasport dated in London this 5th day October 1803-----

The verso with additional letter reading: This autographed letter (or pass) was written by ex-President James Monroe while minister plenipotentiary of Great Britain.

It was found amid a huge pile of old documents and letters in the Bank of Charleston SC on the morning of April 15, 1865-the day following the re-raising of the old flag over the ruins of Fort Sumter----

The Southern pine frame that contains the letter was a portion of the foot stool taken on the same day from the shell-riddled old St Michael's church - ("this stool bore upon it - Rev. C. Storms 1833") The letter and stool were found and appropriated but its present owner = Edwin A. Stu__?
