Description:

**Jan de Baen (attributed to) (Dutch, 1633-1702)
PORTRAIT OF FRANCOIS VAN BREDEHOFF (1648-1721)
oil on canvas, framed, unsigned
H43 3/8" W37 7/8"

Provenance: Private collection

Other Notes: Francois van Bredehoff van Oosthuyzen (1648-1721) born in Hoorn, Netherlands. He was the son of Adriaan van Bredehoff (1617-1675).

In 1674, Francois was appointed to the board of directors of the Hoorn chamber of the United East India Company (VOC). Hoorn was a highly important port for the Dutch East India Company, the Dutch West India Company, and the Noordsche Compagnie during the Dutch Golden Age transoceanic trade.

In 1675, Francois succeeded his father as magistrate of Hoorn, and in 1682 became Lord of Pijlsweert. By 1686 he purchased the landed estate of Oosthuizen and became Lord; by 1715, Francois was mayor of Hoorn.

The Hoorn harbor tower still stands to watch over this once mighty bustling port with vessels for all seven seas, bears the city's arms, a unicorn with shield and horn, and is flanked by Francois van Bredehoff's coat-of-arms.

A magnificent mausoleum was erected when Francois van Bredehoff died in 1721; it is in the Grote Kerk in Oosthuizen, some 30 miles north of Amsterdam. The Antwerp sculptor Jan Peter van Baurscheit the Elder (1699-1728) was commissioned to create the black and white marble sculptural monument, which still stands today, and is flanked by mourning boards of his wives, children, and family.

The Westfries Museum collection includes two paintings of Francois van Bredehoff by Jan de Baen (1633-1702), the first a three-quart-length portrait circa 1675, and the other titled "The Regents of the Hoorn Chamber of the VOC" painting in 1682.
