Jan Frans Verhas (attributed to) Belgian (1834-1896) AFTERNOON IN THE PARK, circa 1875 oil on canvas, framed, unsigned H31 1/2" W25 1/4" *Artist biography: Having trained with his father, Verhas studied at the Antwerp Academie under Nicaise De Keyser and Jan Verschaeren (1803-63) from 1853 to 1860. He then went to Brussels and placed second in the Prix de Rome in 1860. In Rome in 1862 he painted two works, commissioned by the Belgian government: VELLEDA and THE BATTLE OF CALLO, 20 JUNE 1638 (Beveren, Gemeentelijk Mus.). On returning to Belgium from Italy (and after a period in Paris) he lived in Binche from 1864 to 1867 and was married there; one of his daughters later married the Belgian landscape painter Ghisbert Combaz (1869-1941).
