John A. Washington's Mount Vernon diary and business journal March 29, 1852 - January 12, 1856
detailing daily business contracts and payments with personal accounts of operations and family events, front pages with a "list of Negroes 1852," bound in leather, with inscription on front cover.

Provenance: Property from the descendants of George Washington.

Other Notes: Front cover inscribed: John A. Washington- Mount Vernon- Began March 29th. 1852- Finished January 12th. 1856.
Belonging to John Augustine Washington III (1821-1861), Great-Grandnephew of George Washington and Civil War officer who ran Mount Vernon from the 1840s through the 1850s.

Washington joined the Army in support of Virginia during the Civil War and served as General Robert E Lee's aide-de-camp.

Accounts include discussion of selling Mount Vernon to the State of Virginia; the layout of the family vault; the aquisition of slaves; buying various goods and services; the birth of children; land deals, etc.

    Condition:
  • Broken spine, binding intact with the exception of the first 8-page section which is loose. Interior pages are in near perfect condition with very little discolorations or stains.
