Other Notes: This painting is accompanied with correspondence between Mr. and Mrs. Lumpkin and specialists including restorer John A. Haderer of West Virginia and Edward Dwight, Director of the Milwaukee Art Center. There is discussion in the letters of the painting bearing the name Bachman in the lower right corner although we could not locate the name.
Family lore states that the painting was passed down from John Bachman to his daughter Julia who was married to Captain William K. Bachman. William K. Bachman had a law operation with John Waties.

John Bachman was a scientist and an assistant to Audubon. His second wife, primarily known as Maria Martin often painted birds and wildlife for her husband and also painted many of the backgrounds for Audubon's works. Reportedly she sometimes made copies of the birds in oil. Her daughter, Julia Bachman was also an artist. Accoding to a letter written by Edward H. Dwight, curator at the Milwaukee Art Center, Julia Bachman is known to have painted copies of the turkey and to offer them at $100 each.
