ALABAMA HOMESTEAD

Provenance: Atlanta, Georgia collection.

Other Notes: Kelly Fitzpatrick, born near Wetumpka, Alabama, was a painter and teacher. He devoted his career to presenting the life of his rural central Alabama home in his art. During the 1920s and throughout the Great Depression, Fitzpatrick focused his attention on Alabama's rural landscape and its inhabitants during a socially and economically turbulent period in the State's history. As a promoter of visual-arts organizations in the region, he was one of the State's most prominent and important advocates for art and art education. After a brief stint at the University of Alabama and a few months of training at the Art Institute of Chicago, Fitzpatrick enlisted in the Army in 1918. After the war he returned to Wetumpka and actively painted. He attended the Academie Julian in Paris briefly before returning home to Alabama. He was a popular painter and art teacher in the early half of the 20th century and became the leader of the Dixie Art Colony in Dentsville, Alabama, which was a school that promoted women's art. In 1930 he became a founding member of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and was active in many organizations including the Alabama Art League, the Alabama Watercolor Society, the Birmingham Art Club, the New Orleans Art Association and the Southern States Art League.
