Description:

Lt. Col. Francis Lackland presentation sword Model 1840 Officer's Cavalry saber with scabbard, probably French or German made, unmarked, engraved blade, decorative bronze hilt, and fish skin grip.

Other Notes: Inscribed: F. Lackland from the Warrior Guards. Francis Lackland (1830-1861) was born outside of Charlestown, Virginia. He trained at the Virginia Military Institute and joined the engineer corps of the Alabama Railroad Company in 1850. In 1861 he was promoted to Lt. Colonel of the 2nd Virginia Infantry. He gained recognition for his leadership and courage at the Battle of Manassas where his unit of one hundred held back an enemy advance. He died shortly afterwards from health complications and the effects of battle.

Lt. Col. Francis Lackland's niece, Fannie Lackland (1855-1953) married Lawrence Washington (1854-1920), the son of John A. Washington III, the last private owner of Mount Vernon and the Great-Grandnephew of George Washington.

  • Good original condition with no evidence or repairs or alterations.
    Hilt, guard, grip and handle with wear, scuffing and rubbing. The sheath with pitting, minor rust and wear. The blade with minor rust and wear.
