Maison, Mary Edith Cox California (1886-1954) DESERT LANDSCAPE oil on board, framed signed: lower right, Mary Maison H12" W19 1/2" *Artist biography: Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on March 12, 1886, Mary Cox was educated at the Bishop Thorp School, and studied music in Paris and Philadelphia. After her marriage to Charles Buffington ended, she married Frederick Maison. By the early 1920s she was living on a ranch in Imperial Valley, CA with her family. Self-taught, she painted in her leisure when not busy with the ranch and four children. After 1926 she exhibited widely in the Southwest and about 1930 settled in Manhattan Beach, CA. She was also a pianist and songwriter, hosting a joint art exhibition and concert in Tucson, AZ in 1936. She died in Los Angeles on Jan. 7, 1954.
