Description:

Neoclassical bronze urn on stand 19th century, campana form with relief decoration including frieze featuring Poseidon, Hippocamps, and dolphins flanked by mask side handles, with socle foot raised on tiered, square stand.
H23 1/2" Dia.13"

Provenance: Estate of Frances Lea Watson, Atlanta, Georgia.

Other Notes: Items in the estate of Frances Lea Watson descended to her from her great-uncle Ira A. Watson. Mr. Watson and his wife were avid lifetime collectors of antiques and decorative arts. He was founder of Ira A. Watson Co., more commonly known as Watson's and in some locations as Watson's Backroom. Watson's was a department store chain based in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was founded in 1907 and grew to many locations throughout the Southeastern United States.

Although Mr. Watson was best-known for his department stores, he had a reputation as an entrepreneur, and at the age of 72, when questioned about retiring, decided instead to become a Wall Street stock investor. He made more money in this pursuit than in any of his previous endeavours in business.

Mr. Watson was born on March 17, 1868 and passed away in Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 101.
