Description:

New York Federal mahogany chest with writing drawer circa 1820, rectangular top above conforming case fitted with two short drawers over deep drawer above three graduated drawers flanked by flat reeded columns, the middle drawer fitted with adjustable writing surface and compartments, all raised on short turned legs with brass cups and ball feet.

Provenance: Estate of the late Francis D. "Skeeter" McNairy, Savannah, Georgia.

Other Notes: Acquired from Benjamin Axson, Chatham County, Georgia by descent from his uncle, Randolph K. Axson, a Savannah cotton broker. Randolph K. Axson's first cousin was Ellen Axson, wife of president Woodrow Wilson. Randolph K. and Ellen were grandchildren of I. S. K. Axson, minister of Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah. They all lived in the large manse at the corner of Oglethorpe Avenue and Whitaker Street, now demolished.

    Condition:
  • Refinished, minor veneer repairs, shrinkage crack in top repaired and 1/4" wide strip added to back edge to fill for shrinkage, minor repair to back feet, hardware replaced.
