Description:

Pair American Classical carved mahogany card tables, probably Anthony Quervelle circa 1825, shaped rectangular top over straight frieze supported by crossed-lyre column on four cabriole legs terminating in brass hairy-paw cups and casters.
table 1 size open: H29" W36" D36 3/4"; and closed: H29 7/8" W29 7/8" D18 3/8"
table 2 size open: H29" W35 7/8" D36 5/8", and closed H29 7/8" W35 15/16" D18 1/4" (2pcs)

Provenance: Columbia, South Carolina private collection.
Poplar Gove: The Leroy Pope Mansion, Huntsville, Alabama once visited by Andrew Jackson and his aides.

    Condition:
  • Table 1: Top with shrinkage cracks to veneer. Losses to brass string inlay on both sides, sections of front, as well as 3 returns. Lyre stringing is brass and all present, as are ears.
    Size open: H29" W36" D36 3/4"; and closed: H29 7/8" W29 7/8" D18 3/8"

    Table 2: Top with shrinkage cracks to veneer. Losses to brass string inlay to both sides and sections of front. Lyre base cracked.
    Size open: H29" W35 7/8" D36 5/8", and closed H29 7/8" W35 15/16" D18 1/4"

    Otherwise both with small patches of repaired veneer, as well as wear, rubbing and scuffing consistent with age and use.
