"Auburn" the ancestral home of Baker Johnson, Frederick, Maryland.

Other Notes: The manner in which the mahogany and walnut figured veneers are used to accentuate the panels on the skirt is not typical of this period but has some relationship to the work of William Camp and John Needles who have both been known to use contrasting light and dark woods and inset panels. (See Gregory Weidman et al, CLASSICAL MARYLAND, figs.146, 147, 164 and 165; also William Voss Elder et al, AMERICAN FURNITURE 1680 - 1880 FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE BALTIMORE MUSEUM OF ART, p. 155.
Baker Johnson was owner of the Catoctin Furnace and brother of Thomas Johnson, the first governor of the free state of Maryland, U.S. Representative and U.S. Supreme Court Justice. In 1855 "Auburn" was sold to John McPherson, a prominent Frederick citizen and remained in his family until 2010.
