Pair August Francotte percussion dueling pistols mid 19th century, SN 3127; .36 caliber; carved walnut stocks; steel mounts; smooth bore; scrollwork engraved locks, barrel breeches and trigger guards; minute blade rear sight, rear sight screw for elevated sights and equally small blade front sight on dovetailed steel base; top of each barrel inscribed "A. FRANCOTTE A LIEGE FAIR POUR JOSE LOPEZ."

Other Notes: Possibly made for Jose Hilario Lopez (1798-1869). Lopez was a military leader, politician and the President of Colombia from 1849-1853. He began his military career at the age of 14 and fought in the Wars of Independence against Spain and helped overthrow the Military Government of Rafael Urdaneta in 1831. He also remained active in the Civil Wars following his term as President.
