Other Notes: This plate from a large service ordered by the Dutch branch of the Clifford of Chudleigh, England, and commissioned for wealthy banker George Clifford III (1685-1760).
George Clifford (1657-1727) the father, moved to Amsterdam in 1640 and started an Anglo-Dutch banking dynasty.
George Clifford III was also one of the directors of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The megacorporation founded in the early 17th century is considered the largest company ever existed in recorded history. His directorship allowed him access to supply his summer estate Hartekamp with extraordinary exotic objects from the east, including over 1251 live plant species, published in the Hortus Cliffortianus by Carl Linneaus in 1737.

    Condition:
  • One plate broken and restored; the other with restored rim nicks/chips and hairline. Both with glaze nicks along rims, wear to gilding and spots of retouching to borders.
