Description:

Pair Chinese Export Pronk Dame au Parasol plates circa 1780, for the French market, with well-known painted scene in the Imari palette bound in ormolu reed band; with fitted case of a later date.

Purchased from Henry Moog, Atlanta, Georgia.

Other Notes: The 'La Dame au Parasol' pattern, one of four designs commissioned by the V.O.C. from the Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk, who was sent out to Canton in 1736 and painted services shipped to the Netherlands in 1737 and 38. Pronk's watercolors can be seen in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

    Condition:
  • One plate with quarter of rim restored from the 9 o'clock to the 12 o'clock position; also with hairlines. The other with repaired rim chip on back at 1 o'clock position. Both with wear and rubbing to gilding consistent with age.
