Other Notes: In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Cary family of cartographers produced some of the finest Georgian globes, celebrated for their quality and accuracy. Founded by John Cary (c.1754-1835), a map engraver and seller, and his brother William Cary (c.1759-1825), a specialist in scientific instruments, the Cary firm published their first globes in 1791, advertising them in the Traveller's Companion as "terrestrial and celestial globes in 3, 9, 12, and 21 inch diameter sizes, from entire new plates." All their globes were printed on high-quality papers using modern printing techniques. They even devised a way to incorporate new cartographical updates to their globes with patches and overlays, rather than have old versions replaced. Such updates were issued in 1806, 1815, and 1825. The terrestrial globe of this set includes the 1825 correction, though the original issue year for both was 1799. Production of the 21-inch globes such as these ended in 1825, and were then replaced by an 18-inch model. Despite their age and their massive size, the Cary family's commitment to quality production has insured their globes survive in exceptional condition.

    Condition:
  • Both globes and horizon rings with losses, repairs and inherent alternations; caps restored. The celestial sphere is in better condition than the terrestrial globe. The stand is very good condition, with normal wear consistent with age.
