Other Notes: Born in Chapel Hill, Tennessee on July 13, 1821, Nathan Bedford Forrest would become one of the most notable cavalryman of the American Civil War. Prior to enlisting, Forrest gained fortune as a successful planter and slave trader. He began his military service on June 14, 1861 when he joined what would become the Seventh Tennessee Cavalry. He quickly rose through the ranks to General and led his men in battles throughout Tennessee, Louisiana and Alabama, including notable victories at both Brice's Cross Roads and Fort Pillow. After the war he became President of the Selma, Marion & Memphis Railroad and a high ranking offical in the Ku Klux Klan. Nathan Bedford Forrest died in Memphis, Tennessee on October 29, 1877 due to complications from diabetes. This is believed to be a rare unpublished photograph of Forrest taken after the war.
