Other Notes: Henry Gourdin (abt.1805-1879) was the son of Samuel Gourdin (1766-1821). He worked his way up from a retail clerk in a King Street shop to become a prominent Charleston Merchant. He was a partner in the international firm of Gourdin, Matthiesson & Company and eventually invited his brother Robert Newman Gourdin (1812-1894) to join in the business. Together they were known as the "Cheeryble Brothers. He was elected the President of the Chamber of Commerce in 1853 and served for three successive years. He was a founder of the Bank of Charleston and served on its Board of Directors until 1879. He also became the President of the Blue Ridge Railroad Company in 1852 and also served in the South Carolina Legislature.
Possessing a generous spirit, Henry shared a home with his brother Robert and when the Reverand Thomas J. Young, the husband of his sister Rebecca Ann died, he invited her and her three sons to reside in the house as well. According to family records he treated his three nephews as if they were his own children.
