Other Notes: Self-taught artist Reuben A. Miller was born in Rabbitown, Georgia in 1912. For sixty years he worked in cotton mills, as a preacher at the Free Will Baptist Church, and also as a farmer until he developed glaucoma and began making art. His first pieces were whirlygigs fashioned out of tin, painted with house paint, and placed onto poles. For years dozens of whirlygigs and crosses dotted the lawn of his rural home in Rabbittown outside of Gainesville where they attracted the attention of curious onlookers. The Athens, GA rock band R.E.M. featured Miller and his whirlygigs in a music video in 1984. The increased attention caused a shift in his work. He began painting tin cut-outs of figures and animals along with signs bearing religious messages which he sold to collectors and visitors who stopped at his home. His work is typical of Southern rural self-taught artists like Howard Finster and Bill Traylor. Miller's work has been featured in folk art exhibits at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the New Orleans Museum of Art in Louisiana, and at the Brenau University Galleries.
