Rare American carved mahogany tall post bed Charleston, SC, circa 1830 each post has turned ball-shaped finial atop leaf or floral-and-reeded design that runs vertically on the post, leading to square section that joins the rails and paneled headboard, ending on turned legs with brass cups; bed retains original rails but has been fitted with extended rails to enlarge its size. (Good condition) H94 1/2" W66" L79" *Provenance: The bed was acquired from the late James M. Lea Jr. of Charleston, SC who inherited it from his great or great-great grandfather Christopher Werner, the Charleston ironmonger who built the sword gates at the Citadel. *Note: Though the maker is at this time unknown, there is a bed of similar carving and construction in the collection of the Charleston Museum, reference no. HR-171, that very closely resembles this bed.
