Other Notes: This collection of voyages was issued in 14 installments between 1708 and 1710 and contained some of the first printed accounts in English of the New World by Spanish and Portuguese explorers including valuable historical and anthropological observations on Indian culture. Also included in the collection is John Lawson's A NEW VOYAGE TO CAROLINA which was one of the first recorded accounts of the region. The purpose of Lawson's voyage was to survey the area in preparation for its division into Royal colonies or what would become North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. He traveled from Charleston up the Santee River taking notes on the settlers, vegetation, wildlife and the Native Americans he encountered. He eventually settled near the mouth of the Pamlico River in North Carolina and helped found the towns of Bath and New Bern. Interestingly, In 1711 Lawson set out on the Neuse River and was captured and killed by a group of Tuscarora Indians. This was one of the first acts of the Tuscarora War 1711-1715 between the Tuscarora Indians and the British, Dutch and German settlers.
