Description:

Rare and important \'Dave\' alkaline-glazed stoneware storage jar, Edgefield District, SC circa 1840 five-gallon ovoid jar with ear-shaped handles and rolled rim; inscribed on one side: Mr Miles Dave; opposite side inscribed: February 7th 1840/L. Miles; inscription flanked by five dots indicating capacity of jar, and double slash marks. (Small hole between '1840' and 'Miles' and minor hairline, overall good condition) H14 1/2" Diam.14" *Note: An inadvertent note was posted to lot 505, which was unintentional and was unrelated to this lot. All current scholarship on southern pottery recognizes this inscription as being by 'Dave the Slave' potter that worked for Lewis Miles. We apologizes for the miss leading information and any confusion, which it may have caused.
