Other Notes: William Prescott Smith (1825-1872) was the Master of Transportation on the B&O (Baltimore and Ohio) Railroad from (1860-1866). During the Civil War he was in charge of transporting soldiers, supplies, and horses for the Union forces along the B&O rails. He was a personal friend of President Abraham Lincoln and managed the logistics of his rail travel to Gettysburg where he made his famous address. During a brutal war where the railroads were constantly under siege by enemy forces, Prescott managed to safely transport troops to battle without a single casualty caused by operational error or train accident. It is theorized that Prescott's efficient maneuvering of troops and supplies contributed to many of the Union's successes in battle and eventual victory in the war. He resigned from his post with B&O on July 1, 1866.

    Condition:
  • Corner rim interior with small dents; small dents to lower (undecorated) section of urn; otherwise in very good original condition.
