Rare Best Quality Purdey SxS self-opening sidelock ejector 20-bore sporting gun serial no. 23897, retailed through Abercrombie & Fitch, New York in 1929, toplever, automatic safety, double triggers, cocking indicators, pull 14 1/2", chambers 2 1/2", action fully engraved with rose and scrolling motifs, bottom of action marked: J. PURDEY & SONS, LONDON, blued barrels, right improved cylinder and left full choke barrels, top of left barrel marked: J. PURDEY & SONS, AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET, LONDON, top of right barrel marked: MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL, barrel flats nitro-proved for 7/8 oz. of shot with Birminham and London proofmarks, with raised matted rib, bottom of rib marked: MADE IN ENGLAND, pistolgrip walnut stock checkered at wrist and butt, initial plate on stock initialed: JP, checkered splinter forearm with Anson pushrod; accompanied by stitched leather leg-o-mutton case, monogrammed: JP and marked: V.L.D.

Provenance: Prince Serge Poutiatine by descent, property of a lady

Other Notes: Prince Serge Poutiatine was a descendant of Rurik (circa 862 AD), the progenitor of the Russian Imperial family. Poutiatine was the second husband of HIH Grand Duchess Marie Pavlona, first cousin of the last Czar of Russia, Nicholas II. Prince Poutiatine and Marie Pavlona were divorced in 1924. Prince Poutiatine remarried Shirley Manning, an American, and lived in Paris and the United States until his death in Charleston, South Carolina in 1966. His first wife, the Grand Duchess, died in Konstanz, Germany in 1958.

    Condition:
  • very good original overall condition. 90% plus blueing, original case hardening colors. Bright bores, no evidence of pitting. Minor surface pitting 2" long right barrel under forend. Uniform wall thickness throughout. Highly figured wood with minor dings from handling, small chip missing from toe of the stock, checkering worn but evident. Top lever slightly to right of center.
