Other Notes: Gabriel Bernard de Rieux (French, 1687-1745), born the youngest son of Samuel Bernard (1651-1738), French financier, merchant, and one of Europe's richest men of the time. In the late 1730s Comte de Rieux commissioned portraits of himself and his second wife Suzanne Marie Henriette de Boulainvilliers (1696-1776) by the celebrated portraitist Maurice-Quentin de La Tour (French, 1704-1788). Completed circa 1741, the massive pastel on paper pasted to canvas depicts the stately gentleman wearing his Paris Parliament robe, seated in his study surrounded by rare and fashionable objects illustrating his wealth, including fine books. When examining the velvet-draped tables, three lavish volumes can be seen. When examined closely they appear to from the offered set. The spine decoration, red-edging, and pale-brown calf design match the characteristics of the offered lot: BIBLIOTHECA GRAECA, SIVE NOTITIA SCRIPTORUM VETERUM GRAECORUM, already in the collection since 1728. The portraits can be seen at the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles) and Musee Cognacq-Jay, Paris.

Albert May Todd (1850-1931), was an American chemist, businessman, politician, and philanthropist. Known as "The Peppermint King", he made his fortune by becoming the world's leading producer of peppermint and botanical oils and extracts.
From 1912 Todd traveled extensively throughout Europe, visiting thirteen counties and studying matters of public ownership and regulations of monopolies. It was during his year-long visit that his lifelong passion for rare books was rekindled, and he began collecting voraciously. Within 18 years and by his death in 1931, Todd had gathered a massive collection of over 11,000 rare volumes from ancient manuscripts to 23rd century BC clay tablets. Today, his collection is the foundation for the Rare Book Rooms at Upjohn Library, Western Michigan University, and University of Michigan.
