Other Notes: Jane Elizabeth Chamberlain Chichester (1833-1914) and her husband, Charles Edward Chichester (1834-1898), were Pennsylvania natives who moved to Charleston, South Carolina from Philadelphia where Mr. Chichester had been a reporter for the Pennsylvania Enquirer. Chichester quickly became involved with the Charleston community on the eve of the outbreak of the Civil War and was instrumental in the organization of the Zouave Cadets, a militia company formed in August 1860, and later served as its captain. In February 1862, Captain Chichester was authorized by Judah Benjamin, the Confederate Secretary of War, to "raise a company of Artillery for three years or the war," and by early summer the Gist Guards was on James Island near Secessionville. Mrs. Chichester had paid a brief visit to her husband while his company was stationed at Castle Pinckney in 1861and later, in June and July 1863 she visited him when he commanded his heavy artillery company, the Gist Guards, at Battery Wagner. She writes about both Castle Pinckney and Battery Wagner as she remembered them from the war years.
