Description:

Rare Charleston Federal inlaid mahogany sideboard South Carolina, circa 1790, serpentine top with triple-line inlays and single lightwood along the edge, over configuration of short, long, and wine drawers, all with line inlays and banding, incurved shelf below the center drawer, on six square tapered legs, each with large diamond inlay on the upper stile followed by unusual double bellflower drops on upper and lower part of legs outlined with line inlays, above wide ankle banding; H39" W66" D24 1/4"

Provenance: Descended through a Charleston family; name of family is private but will be shared with the purchaser.

Literature: Related to figs. NT3 & 4 in THE FURNITURE OF CHARLESTON 1680-1820 by Bradford Rauschenburg and John Bivins and to figs.59 & 60 in CHARLESTON FURNITURE 1700-1825 by Milby Burton. This board, with an incurved shelf below the center drawer, is a transition between the open arch and a fully enclosed lower cupboard of later boards. Of the mentioned figures, this example is by far the most elaborate with inlay, stringing and fine veneers.

Other Notes: Believed to be only known example of a Charleston sideboard with double bellflower inlays.
