Other Notes: Henrietta Couturier's parents were both born in St. John's township, now the area near Charleston and Berkeley Counties in South Carolina. Her mother, Eleanor Oliver, was born in 1760, and her father Philip Couturier was born in 1754. On May 2, 1807, Henrietta married Elias Couturier, born in South Carolina in 1775. Henrietta and Elias had three children, Harriet Jane, Peter James and Charlotte Henrietta, before Henrietta's death in 1817. Henrietta's daughter Harriet married John Peyre Thomas, M.D., and had six children with him before her death. Harriet's son John Peyre Thomas graduated from the Citadel and fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy. On April 12, 1861, Thomas commanded one of the batteries at Cummings Point on Morris Island at the Battle of Fort Sumter. Thomas's use of the first rifled cannon used in America was responsible for much of the damage to the fort. He earned the rank of colonel during the war, and after the war served in the legislature of South Carolina. After a move to Charlotte, Thomas founded the Carolina Military Institute in 1873, which he ran until 1882, when he was called to return to the Charleston area to reopen the Citadel. Following Harriet's death, her husband married her younger sister, Charlotte Henrietta, and went on to have twelve more children.
