Description:

Rare Chinese Export Newbury armorial platter circa 1815
rectangular form with chamfered corners and vibrantly painted dragons on stylized cloud ground centering ornate medallion with arms of the town on NEWBURY surmounted by banner with motto: Burges de Newbury.
L11 1/2" W8"

Provenance: Purchased from Douglas Lorie, Inc, Palm Beach, Florida, circa 1979. Property from an Ohio private collection.

Literature: Howard, David. CHINESE ARMORIAL PORCELAIN. London: Faber, 1974. pp.398

    Condition:
  • Painted surface with some spots of heavy wear, mainly affecting black decorations of the armorial. Some fritz/nicks to green cartouche. 3, 6, and 8 o''clock portions of rim repaired. Underside base with restored rim. It is difficult to tell because the restoration is very good, but a large portion of lower section of the plate may have been broken; this would account for the evidence of rim repairs.
