Description:

Rare Edgefield stoneware storage jar, stamped N Ramey & Co Pottersville, circa 1838, rim above high tab handles on ovoid body exhibiting rutile glaze runs at each side bearing six punctuates and horseshoe at upper body along with N Ramey & Co stamp at lower body.
H17 3/4" W14"

Provenance: Evans, Georgia private collection.

Other Notes: One of the rarest marks among Edgefield stoneware, N Ramey & Co. was only in existence approximately two years. In 1836 Nathaniel Ramey purchased one third interest in Pottersville's Drake & Rhodes factory which formed Drake Rhodes & Co. and by 1838 the pottery had gone from Ramey, Rhodes and Co. to Rhodes Ramey & Gibbes, finally becoming N Ramey and Co. However, by 1840 Nathaniel Ramey had completely dissolved his interest in Pottersville. During the time this jar was created Pottersville was the home of the slave potter we know as Dave. This vessel is very much in the form of the wares Dave was producing in the 1830s and 40s. The horseshoe and six punctuates at the upper body increases the likelihood that this jar was, in fact created by Dave while working with N Ramey & Co.
