Description:

Rare Georgian opaque-twist ratafia glasses circa 1750-70, round funnel bowl on single thread edging gauze corkscrew on plain conical foot, H8 1/4"; and another with plain stem, H6"
(2pcs)

Provenance: Estate of the late Francis D. "Skeeter" McNairy, Savannah, Georgia.

Other Notes: Ratafia is a cordial made from an infusion of macerated fruit and bitter almonds into a brandy-like liqueur, originating in Southern France. This sweet liqueur was much loved by aristocrats of the English Regency, and special drinking stems were ordered to hold the wondrous potion. The 1828 ROBERT'S GUIDE FOR BUTLERS & OTHER HOUSEHOLD STAFF-THE HOUSEHOLD SERVANT'S DIRECTOR, published in 1828 by Robert Roberts (p.104#60) lists the following receipt for ratafia:
An Excellent Good Ratafia, By F.N.
Into one quart of brandy pour half a pint of cherry juice, as much currant juice, as much of raspberry juice, add a few cloves, and some white pepper in grains, two grains of green coriander, and a stick or two of cinnamon, then pound the stones of cherries, and put them in wood and all. Add about twenty five or thirty kernels of apricots. Stop your demijohn closed and let it infuse for one month in the shade, shaking it five or six times in that time at the end of which strain it through a flannel bag, then through a filtering paper, and then bottle it and cork close for use; you can make any quantity you chose, only by adding or increasing more brandy or other ingredients.

    Condition:
  • Both in good condition. Twist-stem glass with a sand-like feel to the glass. Other glass with institutional marking: 8.4.66.19 above c1750.
