Rare Palmetto Fire Engine Co photograph Charleston, circa 1870 depicting fire engine carriage emblazoned with palmetto tree insignia, taken at the Palmetto Fire Engine Station House on Anson Street in Charleston; verso inscribed: Palmetto Fire Engine Charleston 1870; within contemporary frame. (Very good original condition) sight size: H11" W14 3/4" *Historic information: Charleston City Directories of 1840 list the institution of the Palmetto Company which was incorporated in 1841. They are listed as being on Anson Street, near the corner of Hasel Street. The 1867 listing states the president of the company was Hugh Ferguson and the company consisted of 63 men, 1 steam engine, and 1 boiler. The Palmettos are listed as being one of five companies in the city of Charleston in 1870, and was assigned to District 1 whose territory served the city south of Calhoun Street and east of Meeting. The old Palmetto Fire Engine Station House still stands today at 27 Anson Street in Charleston, South Carolina, and a present-day photograph of the building is available upon request.
