Description:

Rare Regency gilt and Japanned dining chairs, attrib. Crace circa 1820, toprail tablet with cartouche depicting figural chinoiserie scenes in various pursuits in exotic settings on gilt trellis ground, leading to scrolling armrests and saber legs adorned in gilt designs; each with cushion seat; BH34 1/4" SH17" W20 1/2" D20 1/2" (6pcs)

Provenance: It is believed that either Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1746-1825) or Thomas Pinckney (1750-1828) of Charleston, South Carolina purchased more than one set of these chairs. The sets have been divided as they have been handed down to descendants over the past centuries. There are partial sets in the Joseph Manigault and Nathanial Russell houses in Charleston. This set of 6 came from 12 Tradd Street and were purchased by the current owner from a Pinckney family friend in the late 1940's.
