Other Notes: Sir William Stuart (1798-1874), a noted British book collector who accumulated a large library at Tempsford Hall, his home in Bedfordshire. After his death, a portion of his extensive collection was sold at auction by Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge in 1875, and in 1895 an other group of volumes was auctioned by Christie, Manson & Wood. The sales realized over 4,296.00 GBP, over $700,000 in today's currency. Many books from the auctions were purchased by the Royal Library at Windsor, and remain an essential part of the Royal Collection. The remainder of the books and library lost in the 1898 fire at Tempsford Hall, Bedfordshire.
Forster Alexander Sondley (1816-1897), a prominent Asheville attorney, was a passionate book collector and amassed some 40,000 volumes during his lifetime. In his will, Sondley bequeathed his library to the City of Asheville.
