Description:

Rare Southern stoneware pitcher, attributed to Rhodes or Phoenix Factory Edgefield, South Carolina, circa 1850
rich alkaline glaze with tooled rim and pinch-formed spout outlined by iron slip decoration, on bulbous body surrounded by double-decorated iron and kaolin foliage.

Provenance: South Carolina private collection.

Other Notes: This Rhodes pitcher is said to be one of only three known to exist exhibiting this particular decoration. The pitcher is widely regarded as one of the less common forms created in the Edgefield district of South Carolina during this time period.

    Condition:
  • Professional restoration detected only with Black light at spout 3 3/4" rim 2 1/4" and entire restoration to handle, otherwise good overall condition having wear consistent with age.
