McLaws included comments and observations about friends, including his brother, Lafayette McLaws, a graduate of West Point and career military officer, who joined the Confederate Army and rose to the rank of general. William R. McLaws served the Confederacy briefly in 1864 when he was provost marshal of Augusta with the rank of captain. In his journal, he wrote about South Carolina's secession from the union in December 1860. "South Carolina is now a free sovereign and independent state, her first act of secession was accomplished this day," he recorded. And on 31 January 1861, he noted, "I am inclined to think now that the first blood will be shed in Charleston harbor, but I am in hopes that a wise Providence has willed otherwise." (19pcs)
