Description:

Regency style paint and gilt-decorated armchair set late 19th century
shaped crestrail and scrolling stiles with curule back supporting scroll arms to bowed seatrail retaining slip seat, resting on saber legs; rosewood grain paint with floral accents and gilt arms.

Provenance: Descended through the estate of Dora Gray, a well-known Columbia, South Carolina decorator from the 1930s to the late 1950s. Miss Gray 's home and shop was located at 1316 Gervais Street, on property now occupied by Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

    Condition:
  • Some with slightly loose seatrail joints; one chair with overpaint on gilding, otherwise gilding in good condition with minor losses; paint is very good with scattered small losses; minor shrinkage cracks and other imperfections consistent with age.
