RS1 was commissioned in 1887 for the Norwegian Society for Shipwreck Salvage at the Colin Archer shipyard in Rekkevig, Norway, and was launched in 1893. RS1 was later named "Colin Archer" after the legendary Norwegian naval architect and shipbuilder.

Roughly 30 boats of this type were built, most of them at the Colin Archer shipyard. RS1 Colin Archer has had an eventful past. She served as a salvage vessel for 40 years, and in 1933 was sold to a private owner. She sailed across the Atlantic in 1938, suffered severe storm damage in North Carolina in October 1954, and was found as a wreck on the Potomac River in 1960. In 1961, she was returned to Norway as deck cargo aboard the freighter "MS Tasco". In 1972, the oldest salvage vessel in Norway was entrusted to the Norwegian Maritime Museum in Oslo, and the following year she was under the supervision of the Colin Archer Cutter Club, who has completely restored her. Today she is sailed by the Norwegian Maritime Museum as a reminder of the past.
