Shepard, Claire American (1881-1979) FIVE WORKS: 'VIEW OF PASITANO ( MAIN SQUARE),' 'VIEW OF POSITANO II,' MOUNTAIN SIDE VIEW; 'POSITANO;' AND 'ROME' all watercolor on paper signed and some dated: 1964, 1969, 1966 sight size: H12.75in W9," H9in W12 1/2," H9in W12 1/2," H9.5in W17 1/4," paper size: H13.5in W20 1/4 *Note: Some with labels on verso lent by Willoughby Institute *Note: Was music critic on a St. Paul, Minnesota, paper before this century began. Became deaf in the 1950's. Was in a retirement home in Seattle from which she could see ships arriving and departing on Puget Sound. One day packed her bags and sailed for Australia without a word to her family. From Australia sailed on to Italy, where she enrolled at the Positano Art Workshop, studying with American painter Eugene Charlton-Rafalsky. Her first show was organized by Eugene Walter at the Temple University Art Gallery in Rome, as was another in Princeton. Her travels in the Balearic Isles, Sicily, South Italy, are reflected in her work, as is her residence in Rome.
